Canadian Tire Prepaid MasterCard Review: No Monthly Fees!

Canadian Tire Perpaid Mastercard is no longer available. Please check out the Top 5 Canadian Prepaid Cards Article.

Canadian Tire has launched their own CT Prepaid Mastercard.

But before applying, be sure to read my Prepaid Mastercard/Visa review here, as well as my article on using a prepaid gift cards to book hotel rooms and rent cars

This Canadian Tire Prepaid Gift Mastercard can be used at any retailer that accepts Mastercard, not just Canadian Tire stores. Hopefully they'll be able to issue Canadian Tire Points/Money as a reward/incentive.

At the moment, the Zoompass Card may be a better bargain, but it likely won't last for long. The closest competition to the Canadian Tire Prepaid Mastercard is the BMO Mosaik Prepaid Travel Mastercard. Both cards are reloadable, and have low fees.

The Canadian Tire Prepaid Mastercard is currently Ontario only!

CT Prepaid Mastercard Strong Points:

The Canadian Tire Prepaid Card appears to be one of the cheapest re-loadable card in Canada with:

  • No monthly fee
  • No purchase fee
  • No activation Fees (compare to $10 for the BMO card!)
  • Just a $1.50 fee per card load.

The Canadian Tire card appears to be one of the non-anonymous cards, where your name will be embossed on the top of the card itself. For more anonymous cards, read my guide!

A nice feature, however, is that the Canadian Tire application website allows you to get a card for a friend too, so you can have Canadian Tire gift cards as well, or give them to a son/daughter to learn how to properly use a Mastercard/Visa before getting a real credit card.

December 3rd, 2009 Canadian Tire Prepaid Mastercard Application

I filled out an application for this card this evening. It took 2 minutes. No request for a social insurance number, employer, annual eanrings and no request for any kind of banking information, so I don't think they'll conduct a credit check. The card's application website is riddled with spelling mistakes, spell-check anyone? Next I'll see how to go about loading the card with funds.

The card application can be found here.

hi

ctmastercard

I was trying to load a new ct mastercard that I got in the mail. But apparently the website is no longer functioning and has been shut down, so now I can't load it. What about titanium mastercards or visa from money mart. They have high service charges though.

I apply for one 1 month ago

I apply for one 1 month ago and did not receive anything. They told me they will contact me but they did not. Now I go back on the website and somethign is wrong with it now.

Just got an email saying they

Just got an email saying they are shutting down the CT prepaid card as of April 15 2010. Wonder what happened?

CT Prepaid Mastercard Closing Down

Who knows. Possibly a fraud issue? I'd imagine the business model for a free prepaid card isn't that great, with all of the identification requirements, paperwork, handling client phone calls, etc.
I've emailed them, but I don't expect a thorough reply :)

Here's the email that they sent to me (and presumably everyone):
Dear Customer,

Good riddance. I loaded

Good riddance. I loaded money two weeks ago and it still hasn't appeared. Tried calling customer service and they are f-ing useless. They are crooks

does anyone know after you

does anyone know after you load money in does the amount automatically go into the card? Or does it take a few days for money to transfer into card?

CT Prepaid Money Load Times

I'm not sure exactly how long it takes, but it's not instant, especially depending on your bank (mine for example seems to send bill payments once a day, at the end of the day).

My session kept timing out

When I went to apply, no matter how fast I typed and hit send, I kept getting a your session has timed out due to inactivity, please try again, could be my browser, will close this one down and try another one just in case!

Useless

I applied for and received the ct prepaid mastercard. Went online to activate it and found out that you cannot load any moneys on it through online banking. The only option they showed was a pre-autherized debit or walk into a Bank Of Montreal. Ugggg! NO THANKS!!! This card is useless to me.

Just the first time

You must send in a void cheque for pre authorized payment before you can add funds to the card. After sending in the void cheque and loading the card you wll be able to use your online banking to top the card up. I am sure this is a safeguard from someone transferring money from an account to a credit card and then spending it

cannot load these in a

cannot load these in a Canadian Tire store

Avoid this card hidden confirmation criteria, lacks security

The application process is faulty and has hidden confirmation criteria. It required the I submit (fax or email) additional information to confirm my identity after I had completed the form. It required to level of identification: Proof of date of birth and proof of current address. This is totally unacceptable to be sending this sort of information via the internet or fax where security is totally nonexistent. This is absolutely useless for people who are mobile such as students or temporary residents.

So far Ontario residents

So far Ontario residents only. Provincial Statutes of Liability bar this card from my Province in Western Canada for now.
They do not do a credit check, the do an identity check. If you are in default or have collectors after you, the prepaid card will be made known to them. Along with your info on application. Since they use the same reporting agency as the creditors do. Any attempt to seize your funds for repayment of debt, is within your Provincial and Federal scope of law, a subject I am vaguely familiar with. It is a risk I wouldn't take if you have credit woes. Read the fine print bottom of document on the application site.

can somebody tell me if its

can somebody tell me if its available in any other province than ontario???????

CT PREPAID CREDIT CARD APPLY ONLINE

Worked fine for me, told me I passed and card was in the mail........

I tried filling out the form

I tried filling out the form and when I went to select 'province' all it showed was 'Ontario'. So I'm guessing it's not for all of Canada yet. ):

Website Seems to be Down

I tried to logon to ctprepaid.com and it won't load. Have they decided to discontinue this or something?

I tried to apply for one,

I tried to apply for one, however it told me that I did not provide enough information. I have filled in all the blanks correctly. Do you know if I can go into a Canadian Tire store and go get one in person?

About CT Card

I am told by Canadian Tire company that you can go into a Canadian Tire store and get one of the prepaid cards there.

Canadian Tire Prepaid Mastercard In-Store Availability

It's possible they have the applications there, but they'll just mail them away (or have you fill it out online right then and there). The cards themselves are surely not available in stores.

thank you

thank you for these reviews. I have applied for the Cdn Tire prepaid card. Will let you know how it goes.

unable to apply

Hi, i went on the link that you published to apply for the canadian tire prepaid mastercard, but I'm unable to fill the form. Some informations are missing on the page, there are only empty boxes with nothing to tell what we need to write. I even tried to open the page with Google Chrome rather than Internet Explorer but still as the same problem. Can anyone help me. Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the great info. Was getting real sick of paying the $5.95 fee for the Vanilla MasterCard although it was available at Petro and I got some serious points off of it (they had a promotion for double points on gift cards for a while). Also I had to go to Shoppers to get one as high as $200.00 but they didn't give any Optimum points on it!!!!
Funny though, currently the only bank offering to load/reload the card is BMO who seems to be the main competition for reloadable cards in Canada.
Anyway thanks for the great blogging on the subject of pre-paid cards. This will help a bunch!
