Canadian Passport Application Form References: Who Can Be My Reference?

Well, someone asked a question about references here. Soooo, I decided to do a search on Google, and up came one of my sites instead of Passport Canada, haha. It's funny because I barely touch on the subject, but this will be a specific post.

Who Can Be My Reference on the Passport Application?

  • Anyone that has personally known you for 2 years, is not your relative and speaks English or French

Who CAN'T Be My Passport Application References?

  • Your Guarantor cannot be your reference
  • If your reference is outside of Canada, they still must speak English or French

Who Should be my Canadian Passport Reference?

  • People With Cell Phones, since they can be easily contacted
  • People who know you well and could, in theory, fill out your application for you (ie: they know where you live, where you work, around when you were born, etc)

Who SHOULDN'T Be My Passport Application Reference?

  • People that might be unavailable should Passport Canada try to verify things
  • People that Passport Canada might have some reason to not trust (I'll leave that with you)

Can the person giving reference for me be an American or do they have to be Canadian? I live in the U.S. right now.

Americans as Canadian Passport References

References may be of any citizenship. A Canadian would probably be better than nothing, but definitely not required. Tons of non-resident Canadians get passports with non-Canadian references. They do need to speak English or French, which shouldn't be a problem in your case. Check your my article on Who Can Be Your Canadian Passport Reference here.

Questions for References

I have no idea myself. They usually don't call, but I'd imagine that if they did, it is mostly to verify the information on the application.

I'm still not sure what makes a good reference

what if they have a criminal record, have never traveled, and don't work. Can that person be my reference?

Well, nothing that you've

Well, nothing that you've said would disqualify them, but choosing someone else if possible may not be a bad idea.

I just want to add that

I just want to add that relatives cannot be references.

Re: relatives as references

Just to add, family can't be references but *can* be guarantors (provided they have a valid passport that will not expire within a year)
