Contextual Advertising: Power of Italics, Bold & Titles And Drupal

Making Contextual Advertising Relevant to your Content

Just a quick article on the power of writing properly in order to gets ads to be relevant to your site's or page's content.

There is one page under Drupal 's Administration menu that is titled: "Top referrers in the past 16 weeks."

Note that the entire title is bolded, and "16 weeks" is in italics.

Well guess what kind of ads I ALWAYS see on this page?

Advertisements for infertility treatments. For the past 4 months, always an ad for fertility treatments. And its not like any ads on this page were ever clicked (doing so would be hugely against the TOS). And there is absolutely nothing else on the page that would really trigger it to go any other way. The rest of the page is just hyperlinks and relatively devoid of real content. Recently, I've also been getting an advertisement about places to get married (perhaps one could one day write a horoscope based on these ads if the targetting gets good enough).

The whole reason is that "16 weeks" is actually a significant point in a pregnancy. Take a look at the Google Search result for "16 weeks". One would think that something else would show up first (or even fifth), but nope.

Take Home Message: Use Bold and Italics on Key Words

So the lesson is, make sure you write your titles properly, and be sure to bold and italicize key words, even in the title.
